Dust Child: Stories of the Children of the Vietnam War

Look, not everyone is in their best place today. It's Tuesday, AND it’s also election day! 😅😬

I may not be of voting age yet, but even my feed is flooded with posts reminding people to vote or individuals trying to make light of the stress by posting undoubtedly hilarious election memes.

If you found this post, you’re in luck! This has NOTHING to do with elections—it's about books!

✨️ BOOK RECOMMENDATION TIME! ✨️

Whether you're into rom-coms, poetry, or nonfiction, you've probably heard of Kristin Hannah.

Her latest, The Women focuses on experiences in Vietnam, following a woman serving in the U.S. Army Nurse Corps during the Vietnam War.

Now, let me recommend something else you’ll be PROUD to have on your shelf: Dust Child by Nguyen Phan Que Mai.

A historical fiction novel, set in 1969 highlighting the struggles of children born out of the Vietnam War—specifically the offspring of Vietnamese women and American GIs.

The author drew from her own family’s stories and interviewed war veterans to weave their perspectives throughout the book.

Both Dust Child and her first novel, The Mountains Sing were initially written in English: which she first learned in 8th grade.

She has also expressed, “It's important to insert Vietnamese voices into the Canon of Vietnam War literature in English to present stories from the eyes of normal citizens and present Vietnam as a country and not just a war.”

The content of this book is much needed, but the author also has a striking story.

🇻🇳 She was born in Vietnam and worked as a rice farmer.

🇦🇺 She later received a scholarship to attend a university in Australia where she earned her PhD in creative writing.

✒️ She is known for her novels & poetry.

🏆 She is an active participant, and heavily recognized by the Vietnam Writers Association.

Her books have also been translated into over 20 Languages including Spanish, Indonesian, Chinese, and Bengali!!

If this book sounds like your jam, or you simply want to support the author, click below to get your own copy (which you should PROUDLY display on your shelf and BRAG ABOUT!!).
